Ocean wave energy can contribute significantly to the world energy production.   A number of 64 million small ocean wave energy plants would in 2 m wave height produce electrical energy in a quantity equal to 67% of the world total energy consumption.

Each plant would include 4 energy devices where each device consists of a buoy with diameter 3 m and 2 water chambers. The small plants may be assembled in a circular pattern to obtain large ocean energy plants. The time in service of the energy plants would be minimum 30 years.

The required number of ocean energy plants is not very large in world scale e.g. in comparison about 60 million passenger cars are produced every year, read more.

The figure to the left illustrates a wave energy plant consisting of 20 buoys arranged on the circumference of a circle with diameter 130 m. The centre distance between the buoys would be approximately 20 m. If the average wave energy is 40 kW/m (for example at the Norwegian Sea) the average energy produced by the plant would be 1,62 MW.

260 plants would annually produce about 3,6 TWh. The required sea area for the plants would be about 0,13  x  47 km.

The centre distance between the buoys would be approximately 20 m. If the average wave energy is 40 kW/m the average energy produced by the plant would be 12,96 MW.

32 plants would annually produce about 3,6 TWh. The required sea area for the plants would be about 0,73  x  25 km.
